Minoxidil was originally developed to treat high blood pressure and a side effect of causing hair growth was discovered. We do not know exactly how Minoxidil works to cause hair growth but we do know that in a small percentage of men and women terminal hair will regrow. For most people, however, only fine downy hair grows but of much greater significance is the fact that the rate of hair loss appears to slow down. Minoxidil is supplied as a lotion which must be applied directly to the scalp. A weaker solution can be obtained without a doctor's prescription but the higher strenght can be obtained through specialist hair clinics. Specialists in the field agree that there are more people who achieve a response to the higher concentration. The drug takes several weeks and in many cases several months to take effect so patients need to be aware that they may not notice any difference in their hair for a considerable period.
