The author writes about the dales in a half fictional half topographical manner. She paints lovely pictures of the Yorkshire Dales and the folk who lived there in the early part of the 20th C but does so without actually naming the places she describes. Even the illustrations have fanciful titles such as 'The Hamlet of the Shadows'. Those who live in the area, or visit, will be able to identify them as not much has changed about how they look.
